Choosing the right date night movie is not always easy. Besides personal taste, the movies most ladies love are not necessarily what most men want to see. It’s about finding something that will take the both of you places, preferably to make-out land. Actually, to make out land.
You might think, horror. Scary stuff will lead to cuddling, sure, but you don’t want anything gory or traumatizing. Comedy is also great since laughing can be relaxing, a great way to get rid of stress. But you still have to be careful where you tread. Extreme gross-out humour is never the way to go.
These tips will help you make sure the movie you choose is right for the both of you, plus there is a list of great titles you can start with.
Tips for selecting the right movie
1. Avoid Choosing Outlier Movies
Everyone has that movie they love that everyone else thinks is trash. Sometimes, it’s not just one movie but while genres. It wouldn’t be fair to subject your partner to the latest intergalactic movie when they have never shown any sign of being into such. Choose a more mainstream movie, one that any person would relate to and understand instantly.
2. Mind the Timing
It’s not just about choosing a good movie. The timing matters as well. If your partner has had a really long day of tedious work you just had a tensive fight with a friend, a dramatic movie would not be the best option. Instead, go for a humour-filled light movie to lighten your atmosphere.
Similarly, a cancer movie might definitely be a terrible option if your parent just lost a close relative to some terminal illness. Besides, those rarely have totally happy endings – someone always passes away. Yeah, it will leave your eyes teary, but that’s not the atmosphere you want.
3. Take turns
Don’t always be the one deciding what movie to see. Go with your partner’s choice as well. You won’t always be able to find a common ground, but you could always compromise. Your partner could be into a totally unconventional movie genre. It wouldn’t hurt to give it a chance once or twice.
4. Old is Gold – Sometimes
Don’t limit your options to the latest flicks. There are lots of old classics that the both of you might enjoy.
5 Movies for Date Night
1. The Princess Bride- IMDB Rating: 8.1/10
This is a fairy tale adventure involving a pretty woman and a man, her true love. After a long separation, the man must find her and rescue her. Between him and her are evils that must first be battled before they can be reunited.
Yes, the storyline sounds familiar but don’t be fooled. Within this clichéd plot are fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, thrilling chases, dramatic escapes, miracles, and true love.
2. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World – IMDB Rating: 7.5/10
When it comes to girls, Scott easily gets them. He is lucky there. What he has a problem with, though, is getting rid of them. He finds himself tangled up with a girl who has a bunch of exes who control her life and will go to any lengths to prevent him from being with her.
The movie has humour and romance and definitely won’t disappoint, especially if you have a geeky side.
3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind – IMDB Rating: 8.5/10
This is a movie about a couple that tries to give each other a second chance even though their first attempt at being together was hellish. There is some Sci-Fi in there, some drama, and a good measure of romance.
4. Forgetting Sarah Marshall – IMDB Rating: 7.2/10
Nobody likes to break up, or even watch others break up. But it’s a different story if it’s Jason Segal breaking up – it’s fun. It’s actually a different story if it’s Jason doing anything. The movie doesn’t end with a broken hearted Segal, though. He starts a new relationship with Mila Kunis and forgets Sarah Marshal. There’s lots of humour and enough romance in here.
There are, of course, lots of other movies that make great date night selections. And if you’re still looking for that one person to share such moments with, why not reach out? You can bet there is someone looking for you right now.
