How to Create an Effective Online Dating Profile

When you are getting ready to enter the world of online dating, the first thing you will do is create a profile on the sites that you sign up for. This can be a daunting process because there are so many pieces of information that you have to fill out. The most important thing is that you be yourself and that you are honest when creating this profile. However, there are a few other tips that will make the process a bit easier and as pain-free as possible.

Your profile picture is the first impression someone gets when they look at your profile. You want it to be clear, fun and a good representation of who you are. It is best to have a headshot as your primary photo and then a few other photos that show your whole body so that potential dates can see what you really look like. There is nothing worse than meeting someone in person and seeing that they look absolutely nothing like their profile pictures. Make sure that the photos are current – preferably, within the last year – and that they represent your current weight, height, hair color and other physical attributes. Most of all, make sure to smile because people who are happy are more likely to be successful in online dating.

When choosing a picture, make sure that you are the only person in the picture. If you post a group photo, the people checking out your profile will have a hard time figuring out which person is you. Online dating should not be a difficult game, but it should be easy and fun. If you have a couple great photos where you are with other people, simply crop them out and clean up the photo before you post it.

The “About Me” section of a dating profile is probably the most difficult things because few people know what to write. Use short paragraphs and focus on the basics. There is no reason to give away all of your information right away because this is what the actual dates are for. Post some of your interests, a few attributes you are looking for and the things that turn you off. For example, some people will not date smokers or those who drink excessively and if this is you, put this in this section so that potential daters know.

It is important to stress honesty again because this is highly important. When you go out and meet someone in person, they will know if you were dishonest on any part of your profile. Plus, you do not want to build a new relationship on lies. Be honest about things like your job, physical characteristics, likes and dislikes. You want someone who you will have fun with and have things in common with and the only way to ensure this is to make sure that all of the information on your dating profile is completely accurate and honest.
